Carnival EVOLUTION

Almost FInished?

Almost finished?  NOPE!  A few more individuals along the bottom front to be added but then cast your eyes to the sky and then check out the blank spot to the left of the Ferris wheel.  You can compare the progress made by looking at the previous image just below this.

15/15

A couple of emails asked if there is more pics coming to show progress. Very nicely asked by the way. Yes! Here is one , a bit later than I thought but surprisingly as I get to the final images along the bottom front it is taking me longer to decide how to fit another activity (I don't like to duplicate if I can help it) and also these images at the front will have more detail and taking a little longer as a result to paint. For example Whack a Mole on the right is taking shape and the addition of Mr. Balloon Man in the middle has had some spin off and what the heck is going on at the right around Glitter SurPrize Booth? The previous image had 24 painted and 15 ghosts. This image has those 15 now painted and another 15 ghost added.

24,15

This image has 24 new individuals  and 15 ghosted images added. Getting close to having the last bottom area filled with individuals. But still lots more to do once that is done. Whack a mole needs some attention and there is lots planned for the sky area.
Also I notice the colour of some of these pics have a different colour. This image with the gray payment is correct.

Ghosts in the painting

There is going to be approximately 350 or more figures painted once this Carnival Crowd is finished. What very, very few people realize is that each figure is painted twice. Here you can see the first stage of a group along bottom of the painting. Again the strips of paper at the very bottom are my proportional guides to ensure as I get closer to the front (bottom) the figures are progressively larger to match the sizes of the booths. Next week I'll post the image with the Ghosts painted in colour.

Here is the next stage where the ghosted images ( the image to the left) are finally filled in with  colour. It’s the nature of acrylic paint to be somewhat translucent if painted thinly. Using lots of paint solves that but the bit of detail I want with these figures on a rough (canvas) surface makes it almost impossible. So I paint smooth, first in white, then the colours. It also gives my a chance to rough in the images to check size and shapes before I commit to colour.

Carnival is now Open and the crowd is flowing in. Compare the previous image to this and you will see the booths have progressed a lot and of course  people now filling the area. Check out all the individuals in the rides, people lining up for tickets. Have you found the Angel and the Devil, a streaker , Bugs bunny and the tall man? Around 200 individuals and more to come!

Here the carnival booths are getting roughed in. Note how they are smaller in the back and also the angle from the centre out to the sides help create that perspective i mentioned earlier. The paper squares with images on them are my guides to help me as I begin to paint individuals going from back to front and in proportion to the carnival booths. Ferris wheel characters are almost completed and the centre swing ride is forming up.

The Second Sketch adding the Carnival booths. This was to get a feel for the positioning, and perspectives.   As I continue to add developing stages you'll see how things take shape and change!

Carnival, crowd, painting, Ogilvie

Late Spring, Early Summer, I began playing around with an idea I've had for a while about doing a painting of a Carnival Crowd.  This is the first very rough concept sketch I made.

Three 24" x 48" panels. Acrylic on Triptych Gallery Canvas. We collect information in stages. A first glance at a fall forest you notice groups of colours, and closer observation yields a multitude of hues of each colour, different shades juggling for prominence. This is how Canadian Diversity was painted; in stages and with closer inspection more detail and texture and if you search you will find almost 2 dozen figures in the painting, some large, or abstract and some quite small. Our Canadian Forests in the Fall really appealed to me as a metaphor for all the different races, nationalities, religions and political groups that compose the diversity of our Canadian Landscape.

This piece is an all wood "painting" It has a Wood painting base, with the mounted pieces (leaves) are the shims used found in canvas packages to tighten the surface. Ice Fishing - Enjoying a Winter Day

This framed 12 x 24” is # 11 from my very popular Ice Fishing Series. There are only two paintings left in this series at this size. I am originally from Midland, Ontario on Georgian Bay, where Ice Fishing is a popular winter activity. I would spend hours out on the ice taking photo's of different activities, meeting people and enjoying the wonderful Canadian winter days. It was a little too cold to paint En plein air, so I would print out the images and assemble them on the wall to use as my "model".

                                      This is Nuts

This 20 x 24” consists of all real acorns and oak leaves sealed in a heavy resin, mounted on a wood board. My wife and I now live in Windsor, but this painting was inspired from our home in Midland, Ontario. In the Fall, acorns fell like rain from our oak tress. I got clobbered on the head so many times while cutting the grass I was tempted to wear a helmet. Some spots on the ground had so many acorns it was like a bag of marbles had been spilled. I began to pick them up and toss them into bags. Always the artist, I soon wondered what I could do with these. It seemed a shame to toss them and they certainly were doing a good job of getting my attention. So here you have carefully washed acorns and waxed oak leaves all nicely sealed with resin into one big nut. Really. This is Nuts! This is a heavy piece and is packaged extra safely.
